Getting Out-Getting In
A Farm Transition Workshop
Saturday, February 10, 2024 | 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Knox Town Hall
2192 Berne-Altamont Road, Altamont, NY 12009
Transition is among the most difficult challenges both experienced and novice farmers face.
The complexity of the tax system, and of dealing with potential heirs and their wishes for your
farm, make navigating a path to retirement almost impossible for farm families.
Locating suitable land and finding the funding to acquire that land and the resources necessary to get the operation going makes getting into a farm extremely difficult for beginning farmers.
Experts from federal and state government, the private sector, the legal community, and non-
governmental organizations will be here to help sort out the tax, legal and other complexities of
passing a farm to the next generation and acquiring the resources to start a new operation.
Farmers in the process of transitioning their farms will be here to tell their personal stories of
the challenges they are facing and how to overcome them.
Speakers will include:
Commissioner of Ag & Markets Richard Ball and Ethan Ball (Schoharie Valley Farm) Paul, Phyllis and
Grace VanAmburgh (Dharma Lea Farm)
Gary and Pam Kleppel (Longfield Farm)
Presentations by panels of experts, and networking opportunities
will be available to describe programs and resources that can help in the transitioning process.
Experts will include:
Jerry Cosgrove & Tim Biello (American Farmland Trust)
Stephen Hadcock (Cornell Cooperative Extension)
Ed Maxwell (Farm Credit East)
Kate Hemstreet, Matthew Forrest & Jacob Evans (Farm Service Agency, Schoharie County) As well as attorneys who deal with agricultural legacy issues and others.
Lunch and Coffee Breaks provided.
Registration is $10. Space is limited.
